Artist’s Statement
By profession I am a chemist. I work at the intersection of art and science—the art process is the big mystery but the science provides some framework for understanding how the artists’ materials behave. My paintings are abstract compositions in acrylic medium. I enjoy experiencing the interplay of colors unfold on the canvas and the great surprises that are revealed.
I have been influenced by the works of Kandinsky, Hoffman, Richter, Rothko and Kattman, among others. Music is my painting companion. Whether it is the richly structured Bach Goldberg Variations, the dreamy quality of Vaughn Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis or the highly energetic Stravinsky Firebird Suite, the emotions experienced influence how I work. My most recent infusion of “art energy” came from recent participation in an all day workshop with Richard Kattman at the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts. I find time to paint daily, whether at a home studio shared with my wife Judi, or my studio at work.
