Maggie Smith | Author/Illustrator and Printmaker
Artist’s Statement
Maggie Smith grew up in Harvard Massachusetts where drawing, sewing and crafting filled her childhood with color, shape and pattern.
A long-time author and illustrator of dozens of children’s picture books (www.maggiebooks.com), she has also worked in textile design, and she makes sewing patterns for stuffed toys and decorations (www.maggierama.etsy.com).
Having lived in New York City, Providence, Los Angeles, Seattle and Long Beach, California, Maggie recently returned to Harvard where she has been exploring a passion for printmaking. Her process includes block printing, layering hand-carved rubber stamps, and creating textured mono-print backgrounds on a Gel plate. This new work is imbued with her love of rich texture, vibrant color, and animals.
